Institute of Nutrigenetics

(ION) is leading the development of precision nutrition in India and is serving as a global platform to provide cohesive training and education towards gaining a broad and deep understanding of the cutting-edge science of nutrigenetics. It aims to facilitate interdisciplinary research in various omics technologies in nutritional sciences among graduate students and health professionals. Scientists at ION seek to discover why people differ in their metabolic and nutritional requirements and to use this understanding to ensure optimal health through individualized nutrition. Their mission is to empower clinicians especially dietitians and nutritionists through training programs and courses.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Dr. Debmalya Barh

Professor at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Dr. Debmalya Barh is a M.Sc.(Applied Genetics), M.Tech.(Biotechnology), M.Phil.(Biotechnology), Ph.D.(Biotechnology), Ph.D.(Bioinformatics), Post-Doc(Bioinformatics), and PGDM(Postgraduate in Management). He has decades of experience in both academic and industrial research and an expert in integrative omics-based biomarker discovery. He has served as R&D head in various personal genomics companies and currently he is a Full Professor (Titular, Grade-E) in Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil where he teaches Precision health and Bioinformatics. Dr. Barh has published over 200 research and review articles, 40+ book chapters, and has edited 25+ books published by Taylor & Francis, Elsevier, and Springer in the fields of Omics, Personalized medicine, and Sports, exercise, and nutritional genomics. He is an editorial board member of various journals including Frontiers, PeerJ etc. and frequently reviews articles for Nature Publications, Elsevier, AACR journals, NAR, BMC journals, and PlosOne, to name a few.

Dr. V. Aravindhan

Assistant Professor in Department of Genetics

at University of Madras, Chennai

Dr. Aravindhan obtained his PhD in Molecular immunology and vaccine research in 2005 at the University of Madras where he had studied Zoology, Biomedical Genetics, and Biochemistry prior. He then pursued his post-doctoral training at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) under the Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) in Bethesda as well as at the Laboratory of Experimental Immunology of the National Cancer Institute at Frederick. He has contributed to publications on immunology and has handled projects at the Tuberculosis Research Centre in Chennai and the NCI. 

He was awarded with the DST-DAAD Indo-German exchange program travel fellowship and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship as a visiting researcher at NIH among others. He was also awarded as the Best Researcher in 2018 by TN CM during the University of Madras Diamond Jubilee celebration.

Dr. Silambarasan Masko Mani

Head of Genetic Affairs at Bione Venture Private Ltd.

Dr. Silambarasan is a geneticist with 10 yrs of hands-on experience in various genetic testing – Karyotyping, FISH, chromosomal microarray, Next-Generation Seq (NGS) – (Illumina – HiSeq and NovaSeq Series). He is experienced in the selection of the right genetic test, Genetic variant of Uncertain significance case Analysis (VOUS), supporting key opinion leaders in clinical genomics and case solving for patient’s benefits. He excels in forming business strategies for setting up new site initiation, and KOL engagement for the business development in clinical genomics and genetic testing.

In addition to handling scientific queries at Bione, Dr. Silambarasan has organized various CMEs, Webinars where he could simplify the concept of genetics and genetic test selection through creative illustrations in the segments of Pediatrics, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Oncology. Furthermore, he managed to establish new key accounts in clinical genomics and created business relationship with Christian Medical College (Vellore), JIPMER (Pondichery), Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre (Chennai), Nagpur Fetal Medicine (Nagpur), etc.,

His awards and Achievements include Gold Medalist in Genetics, DUKE-NUS Certified Medical Affairs Specialist, Best Scientific, and Clinical Genetics Support Award.

Dr. Kumari Malkanthi Ratnayake

Head Lecturer in Department of Applied Nutrition

at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka

Dr. Kumari is currently working as the Head/Senior lecturer attached to the Department of Applied Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. Her main research interests are investigating the nutritional influences of increased cardiovascular disease risk and metabolic syndrome development, including nutrient-gene interactions and assessing cardio metabolic risk factors of different populations groups. Of particular interest is the impact of dietary and meal fat composition on vascular reactivity, insulin resistance and lipid metabolism in different population groups.

Janani Tamilvanan

Founder & Course Instructor at Institute of Nutrigenetics

She is a well experienced nutrition expert and obtained her Master’s degree in Food Technology, Food Science and Nutrition from Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. She gave life to Geneobe Wellness, a young start up specialising in personalised wellness & weight loss solutions enabled by the recent science of personal genomics. She heads the Institute of Nutrigenetics, an online education space to promote research & education in nutrigenetics.

Her forte is her thirst for learning about the nutrient- gene interaction and the latest developments in the field of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics and aims at translating the scientific, evidence-based knowledge into precise, personalised lifestyle recommendations for health promotion and diet- related complex diseases prevention.

Dr Yiannis Mavrommatis

Programme Director MSc of Nutrition and Genetics

at St Mary’s University

Yiannis is a registered dietitian and a registered nutritionist who works as a senior lecturer at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. He is also the developer and Programme Director of the MSc Nutrition and Genetics at St Mary’s. His research area is in genetic profiling and personalised nutrition and he supervises several PhD projects. He is the founder and lead of the Nutrition and Genetics Research Group at St Mary’s, where the potential links between nutrition, genetics and chronic disease are explored. Yiannis is also the Head of Nutrition and Genetics at Nell Health, a genotyping health and wellbeing company.

Dr. Priya Sekar

Lab Researcher at Microbiota Research Group, Sharjah University

Dr. Priya Sekar, obtained her PhD in Medical Microbiology under the Faculty of Medicine from the University of Madras in 2019. The focus of her four years of doctoral research work was on horizontal transfer of drug resistant genes among gut microbiota and enteric pathogens. In addition, she also studied the different mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics in Enterobacteriaceae. During her PhD tenure, she was awarded the ICOM and ESCMID travel awards to present her research work in international conferences, won in paper and poster competitions and published several research papers. Prior to this, she was intensively trained in various Molecular Biology techniques, Bacteriology and Mycobacteriology, as a Senior Research Fellow in National Institute of Research in Tuberculosis from 2011 to 2014. She gained an international teaching experience, from 2010-2011, where she taught Medical Microbiology to MBBS students at SSR Medical College, Mauritius. She had completed her Masters in Medical Microbiology in 2009 from SRM Medical College, where she was awarded the University First Rank.

She was subsequently awarded the prestigious DST-INSPIRE award by DBT, Govt. of India for pursuing research. After obtaining her doctorate degree, she shifted base to UAE. Here, she worked as a front-line healthcare worker, in the position of a microbiologist, at the SARS-CoV-19 testing laboratory at RAK hospital, UAE, in 2020. Presently, she is an active researcher in the Microbiota research group at the University of Sharjah. Her current research work focuses on oral and gut microbiome. She was awarded the Best research work in the 2nd Forum for Women in Research, where her research work on oral microbiome competed at the national level, in UAE. Dr. Priya, has been associated with ION from the year 2019. She had been our course content developer and instructor for our online courses on gut microbiome. She is passionate about teaching and multi-disciplinary research and is constantly seeking to broaden her knowledge horizon.

Mr. Kumar Sankaran

Kumar Sankaran is the Chief Executive Office of Leucine Rich Bio Private Limited and the Designated Partner in Gene Express LLP. He is a business leader with a professional experience of 15+ years in Healthcare Research and Delivery. In his current role he is spearheading the growth and innovation in the Microbiome domain for the Asian market. He is passionate about driving the paradigm shift from “sick care” to “health care”.

Dr. Mahendran Appukutty

Associate Professor in Faculty of Sports Science & Recreation

Assoc Prof Dr Mahenderan Appukutty was the Head, Centre of Postgraduate Studies from 2014 to 2019, at the Faculty of Sports Science & Recreation, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam and started his academy journey in 2001. Currently, he is on sabbatical leave at Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. He holds a PhD in Nutritional Sciences focusing on nutrition, immunity and exercise performance from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, his Master of Sports Science from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nutrition and Community Health from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is the Asst Hon Secretary of Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) and conferred as Fellow of NSM (FNSM). He also serves as Council Member of Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO) and Hon Treasurer of Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM). He also serves as Specialist Representative for Exercise Physiology/Sports Medicine for World Obesity (WO) formerly known as International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO).

Dr. Annalisa Terranegra

Lead of PerNutri

PhD Dr. Terranegra obtained her MSc degree in Biological Sciences cum laudae in 2000 at the University of Siena, Italy, PhD in Molecular Medicine in 2007 at the University of Milan, Italy and Post-graduate Diploma cum laudae in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Milan, Italy in 2015. Before to join Sidra Medicine in 2014, Dr. Terranegra achieved strong experience in molecular biology and genetics during her career at the University of Milan, Italy, as a post-graduation fellow (2001-2003), PhD fellow (2003-2006) and Post-Doc position (2007-2010). Dr. Terranegra covered a consultant position in genetics at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy (2010-2012) and a research fellow position in nutrition at San Paolo Hospital, Milan, Italy (2013-2014). Dr. Terranegra also has extensive teaching experience as Assistant Professor in Nephrology (2007-2010) and in Dietetic Sciences and Technologies (2010-2013) at University of Milan, Italy; Lecturer in Molecular Medicine PhD course (2009-2011) at University of Milan; adjunct Assistant Professor (2015-2020), in the College of Science and Engineering at Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar.

Dr. Terranegra currently cover the position of adjunct Assistant Professor, since 2018, in the College of Health Sciences at Qatar University, Qatar. At Sidra Medicine, Dr. Terranegra leads the Laboratory of Precision Nutrition (PreNutri Lab) that is interested to characterize the mechanisms underlying the role of food and nutrients in the development and the management of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular
diseases, cancer, etc. The PreNutri lab research studies are focused on understanding the effect of diet on gut microbiota and epigenetic mechanisms, as well as diet interaction with the genomic background, using the most advanced technologies such as bacterial 16S rRNA-sequencing, DNA-methylation arrays, DNA genotyping and nutritional assessment (BMI, body fat mass composition, diet and lifestyle habits records, nutrition and micronutrient computing). Thanks to local and international collaborations, the PreNutri lab is currently running many studies on diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, and perturbation of the mother-baby axis during the pregnancy and early baby life.
